The Biobased Industries Consortium (BIC) and the European Regions Research and Innovation Network (ERRIN) have recently released a position paper on the role of regions and industry for a thriving bioeconomy. The ERRIN -BIC position paper outlines a proposal for the most pressing actions for the European bioeconomy to be tackled during the upcoming European Commission mandate period.
For bioeconomy to play a key role in the regions, and for enhanced EU competitiveness and strategic autonomy, the BIC and ERRIN urge the EU to:
- Recognise the strategic and horizontal role of the bioeconomy in different EU policies
- Support the bioeconomy by scaling up and deploying bio-based innovations at a larger scale in order to go from niche to norm
- Implement calls that engage local and regional public authorities in tandem with the regional and local industrial ecosystems
- Foster instruments and opportunities in public-private collaboration for high-priority basic research, upscaling of innovation and its deployment
- Securing the supply of sustainable biomass for biomanufacturing in Europe
