Sustainable and Safe by Design: an EU initiative and framework

Sustainable and Safe by Design (SSbD) is an EU-driven and regulated concept, framing a sustainable and safe design all along the life cycle of products and processes. This concept minimizes the environmental impact from cradle-to-grave and protects human and environmental health by avoiding dangerous materials and processes.

SSbD is a different way of designing products and processes, ensuring better protection of the environmental and human health while maintaining the service provided to consumers.

What is the relation between PROMOFER project and SSbD?

PROMOFER project aims at improving the fermentation processes and downstream purification of organic waste fermentation. The improvement of the processes enables the production of 2 SSbD products, in addition to better waste management, circularization and the production of greener energy: (i) polyhydroxyalkanoates, used in agricultural and packaging sector, (ii) 2, 3-Butanediol, used in textile sector

Thus, the project enables processes and chemical production to be more sustainable and safer all along their life cycle. In the case of PROMOFER project the chemical are produced to supply high-emissions and -pollution sectors – agriculture, packaging and textile. By implementing SSbD for these chemicals, the concept empowers these industries through a more sustainable and safer path, while providing the same service to the consumers.
