On 29 September 2025, the UN marks the 6th International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW), co-led by FAO and UNEP. The day highlights the urgent need to cut food loss and waste as part of building a sustainable food future.
Why it matters
- Food waste drives economic loss, food insecurity, and greenhouse gas emissions.
- The goal: meet SDG Target 12.3 – halve food waste by 2030 and cut losses along supply chains.
- The EU now has binding 2030 food waste reduction targets.
