The European Commission has adopted a new Strategic Framework for a Competitive and Sustainable EU Bioeconomy, aiming to foster a cleaner, more competitive economy by leveraging renewable biological resources from land and sea.
The strategy focuses on scaling up bio-based innovations in sectors like agriculture, forestry, and biotechnologies, while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and creating jobs. With the EU bioeconomy already contributing €2.7 trillion and employing 17.1 million people, the Commission plans to boost investments and create lead markets for bio-based materials such as plastics, textiles, and fertilizers.
The strategy also emphasizes responsible sourcing of biomass, circular practices, and sustainable agricultural methods. It aims to position Europe as a global leader in bio-based technologies by developing partnerships and securing access to sustainable resources. The Commission will support SMEs, simplify regulatory processes, and create a Bio-based Europe Alliance to reach €10 billion in bio-based investments by 2030, strengthening Europe’s resilience and competitiveness in the global market.
